Monica is a witch, and leader of the local coven in Salem. She and her coven "sisters" were targeted by Witch Hunters in the midst of a ritual when they were trying to help one of their own get through her pregnancy difficulty.
She and her sisters lost their powers during the confrontation, and the Charmed Ones arrived in the aftermath to question them what had happened.
