Jackson Ward (1923 - 1963) was a serial killer executed at Alcatraz; his soul became what is known as an evil spirit. To escape from Alcatraz, a soul collector aided him by explaining that Jackson needed to find a body that he could possess. In 1999, Jackson decided to take possession over a tour guide; however he was spotted by Phoebe Halliwell who coincidentally was visiting the prison that very same day.

Jackson Ward successfully escaped the island and sought his revenge on the people responsible for sentencing him to the gas chamber. When Jackson murdered the presiding judge he unknowingly left an ectoplasmic finger print on the weapon. Ectoplasm is basically the ghost's skin and is outside the visual spectrum. Jackson tried to kill others but Prue and Phoebe intervened with a spell and lured him to the Manor where Prue ultimately vanquished him.

- Phoebe said in the mausoleum, "Where's Buffy when you need her?" when summoning Jackson Ward; Jeff Kober (who plays Ward) also portrayed 2 villains in 4 episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer" - Kralik and Rack.
